Because it is recessed, the wall has to be chased or chiselled out so the box can be set in flush. That makes it a natural choice for new work or for renovations where the plaster is already being opened up, and for anyone who prefers a metal enclosure over a plastic one. Before buying, confirm the box is the right size for the twin switch or socket you plan to fit, and check the depth of your wall chase. Metal boxes are generally chosen where extra rigidity or a grounded enclosure is wanted, while plastic boxes are lighter and cheaper but less robust. Compare fixing points and knockouts too, since those decide how easily conduit and cable enter.
